Default GvG

So I've gotten some pretty different answers..and observed some different things in game itself - is GvG dead or actually still going? It seems there are a lot of different guilds still farming the ladder but I'm assuming these are core vets made up of fragments of older guilds that used to be around?

Then again, maybe I'm just being fond of old memories, seeing as how I just came back from a four year hiatus.

Also noticed guilds are still receiving trims for capes - is it still based on the season and is ANET still taking an interest? I'd imagine even for someone like myself who has had a lot of GvG experience and even more HA experience it'd be nearly impossible to break into the GvG realm once again without knowing names of players past that no longer play the game.

Just a thought,

It is near damn impossible to break in into the very top of GvG at this point. The only way you have a shot of getting there is A) Having a group of people to learn and play constantly with. B) Happen to have a high end player guest with you and notice your skills and try you at a higher level and want to have you revisit that skill level.

Haha, the more I come on the forums the more I get depressed. I guess it's good to see people are still GvG'ing...but no hopes of cracking top 200 at least to consistently do some GvG it looks like.

If you're willing to relearn the essentials and find a decent group of players top 200 should be easy in this day and age. It's much easier to reach top 200 now than back in the day for sure.

Interesting - maybe 1200 rating is attainable in top 100? The question being do top guilds battle anymore or is it going to be a wait like HoH for someone with a simmilar rating to arrive :/

Is GvG dead? The short answer to this question is no. Teams still play the ladder and the ATs (less so on the daily ATs, but that is not surprising given their nature, and it was pretty much the same back when you played). But there are not nearly as many teams now as there were then, and overall it just seems a lot less competitive - I mean, sure people want to beat other teams, but there's a lot less of the feeling of importance and seriousness. I know, that made no sense, but maybe you get where I'm coming from, given how long ago (assuming you played for a while before your four year hiatus) you played.

What makes up these teams on the ladder? A majority of them are a few old players with mostly new people, some are made of entireley new people. But none of the really notable teams from the good old days are on the ladder anymore. That's not to say these new teams aren't good, but I highly doubt you'd recognize any player from any team on the ladder.

Capes? Still based on the season? No, receiving capes is not based on the season anymore. Now you get a cape for winning in the mATs all year round, so naturally every mAT you get more cape guilds.

Is Anet still taking an interest? An interest? Hard to say. But at least they still care a bit, as ATs are still running, but chances are someone like you can remember back to the days of the Factions World Championship (or earlier), and if you're looking for things like that now, you won't find anything. Nothing on that scale has been around for a long time.

Getting back into GvG? It wouldn't be hard for you to get back into GvG. Obviously, you'd want to join a GvG guild (most have low requirements - c1+ or so). And getting in the top 200 isn't hard either - there are teams that have won but a handful of matches and are in the top 200. Really the only difficult part for you would be learning the changes to skills since you left (there have been a lot), but other than that I doubt you'd have issues getting back into it.

You've succeeded in getting me very nostalgic... *sigh*

Hope this helped

EDIT: having seen your latest post (A minute before this one, grr! ) about waiting for a match, this is what I have to say:

You will wait for a match. Given the amount of teams on the ladder, it's inevitable. The wait is much worse, however, for a ladder match than it is for a daily AT or a mAT (for the mAT it ain't all that bad). Not much you can do if you can't get a ladder match, but mAT's shouldn't be a giant issue and every once in a while the daily ATs will have a decent number of guilds. Although it's very rare to see the same guilds do daily ATs every day, there is some consistence. If you can find out which daily AT is the most popular, it'll cut down your waiting time. But that's about all you can do :S

Thanks for the in depth response! Really appreciate it. Don't worry, I get nostalgic too..kinda pathetic right? I used to love this game..finding new areas in PvE, figuring all the things out on that end of the game and then just grinding out HA for eternity and running some balanced GvG in a top 100 guild..as well as some..well..not so much liked builds with a few guilds (Forlorn Saviours, Rubies N' Sapphires, Azz).

I'm hoping I can get into it again..would really love to play whatever little PvP this game has left to offer ever since HA went down the tubes (Was hoping to go for r12 in time..but 9-12 is steep enough even before the decreased population to zero in HA).

Here's to start searching for a guild to GvG with..and making new friends I guess as all of the 'older' players are gone.

Edit: And I totally understand the decreased competitive nature you are talking about in GvG..back when GvG was life and death, players got kicked for one wrong move, cape trims were up for grabs, VoD was the best and worst part of the game, and vent rage was quite prevalent.

IGN: Renowned Spartan - if you ever feel compelled to come back in the game and shoot the shit with a fellow old GW geisure like yourself

There is no point, the time invested isn't worth it if you are coming back into this game planning to pvp.

I don't understand how you can possibly still find this game fun.

Easy. I grew up with this game and spent a lot of good times with a lot of good people. Unfortunately, ANET couldn't handle PvP development/maintenance which shows in the state of HA/GvG. They will never come close to mimmicking that in any way, shape, or form in GW2, unfortunately for them.

Try and get into a guild that focuses on daily ATs. Ladder is such a long wait now it's not worth the time.
